The Road As A Canvas

I was at a red light when I was driving tonight and I noticed how everyone kept bunching up and rolling even though the light was still red and was going to remain that way for a long time.

This was not an overly busy road, 2 lanes wide, maybe 10 cars in each lane.  I was in the middle of one of rows of cars with about 5 cars ahead me.
